Review of the Nationwide, FlexPlus:

Bad service

Was taken ill on holiday abroad with heart condition and admitted to hospital immediately put claim in via phone/online could not share all documents online, trying to ring is a joke on hold over an hour each time. Then mu online claims got cancelled. Sent documents in post had text acknowledgement f paperwork in post but no claim number. Try to call to progress claim closed Tues and Thursdays other days can't get though been nearly 3 months post claim now. Always used never claimed terrible service Reviewed on: 9th May 2023

It was best but not anymore

I could have given 7 stars if service was as it used to be. Early 2022 they have made so many changes, mobile coverage restrictions, car break down goes to AA, AA is one of THE worst Companies. I have used RAC, AA and alway had disappointing service but when upgraded to flexi in 2016 it was so good untill 2021, no matter where u breakdown immediate local recovery will turn up and sort you out now AA, car breaks down at home, AA takes 5 hours to send someone just to see, then says wound u be able to take it to the garage yourself even power steering failed and it won’t even move and i said i will speak to the garage on Monday because it’s weekend and all garages are closed, AA puts in its report customer agrees to take it to garage himself i called again to explain its not correct, car steering wheel does move why are they putting my life at risk it can get into accident they promised to send recovery in couple of days time but whole day messages time has changed, i took day off work which cost me £400 a day but they didn’t come, their was no weather issues but they said oh we have so much work load. Now what can get worst then this, travel insurance says it covers all, i lost my expensive watch abroad, i really don’t know where, either i took it off at restaurant for washing hands and put in my side pocket of fleece but i looked everywhere, came back and realised i had travel insurance called them they said u need to go back to that country and log a complaint with local police and they will do investigation and determine value, and that value will go in claim. I said i have receipts books all the documents for what i paid. But they didn’t help so i gave up. Mobile insurance, they never had mobile registration before but now they have , because i asked them in 2017 to register my new phone they said it’s not required we don’t do it like other banks, whenever it breaks or lost etc it will be covered but when i had issue with my phone breakdown they said your phone isn’t registered? Long stories, I referred many people to nationwide just because of their good services but it’s not worth anymore, specially AA is enough yo destroy their reputation, anything AA says is a lie, false promises. Zero customer care

Flex plus mobile insurance is almost a scam, had my iPhone “fixed” several times and now stuck with a low quality aftermarket screen. I haven’t used the other services but judging by the absolute zero responsibility taken by nationwide and the other reviews on here, it looks like it’s a universal service. After 32 years with the bank and too much time wasted I have closed my account and will be moving elsewhere. Reviewed on: 17th December 2022

6 1/h hours waiting for repatriation!

I broke down in france in June 2022 after a loom fire on my motorcycle. Waited 6 1/2 hours after the first recovery failed to find me in the services! Ho hard can it be! The bike was taken to a local garage where I assumed it wilould be fixed, the driver spoke no English and I received no calls from my breakdown company giving me any updates to the repair. After numerous calls I was told that I need to go through my insurance company, I stayed in hotel for 2 nights waiting to see if my bike would be repaired but the garage never even touched it! I received no help or onward travel and I am still chasing them for the hotel expenses! On this occasion I felt very let down by a incompetent service with no support. No I would not recommend. Travel insurance not worth the paper it's printed on

We bought this via Flexplus (£13pm). It says theft is covered. Our bags were stolen from the car boot while we stopped for lunch in Milan on our way to the airport. The whole claim (first ever in my whole life) was rejected as apparently, the responsible thing was either to find a safe box to put the luggage in during those 2 hours, OR to carry everything on me instead of leaving it in the 'LOCKED CAR BOOT, OUT OF SIGHT'!. I thought this is what happens to you if you buy cheap insurance from a cheap company. Nationwide is obviously just that. I'm going to court! Reviewed on: 21st October 2022

Excellent Travel Insurance

I recently fell on holiday breaking both a foot and hand. The initial call handler was new and didn’t give very good advice but did say to call back when at the hospital. From that call onwards the service was exemplary. They booked additional seats for me on the way home on the plane and special assistance. I called five days later when home about expenses incurred and I received an email the following day to say these would be in my bank account within 5 working days. Reviewed on: 16th October 2022

Telephone efficiency

After 26 minutes gave up. Fed up listening to “lots of thanks for your patience /doing our best to connect you etc etc”. Either there are lots of dissatisfied customers or there are not enough people to answer the phones.Terrible service which is a real let-down. Reviewed on: 23rd August 2022

Will not pay out

Made a claim for travel insurance due to a broken arm abroad. Despite sending all the documents correctly and chasing, they said it takes time. After waiting more months they said the claim is closed due to inaction! Then they reopened the claim after i called and said it will be dealt with. 7 months later and no payout. Each time can be over 45 mins wait on the phone. Avoid at all costs. Reviewed on: 22nd August 2022
