Claim rejected due to ridiculous technicality

1
My bike was stolen from a purpose-built, access-controlled workplace cycle store — behind two separate fob-controlled doors and locked using a Kryptonite D-lock to a fixed rack. I made a claim with Bikmo, underwritten by Hiscox. It was rejected. The reason wasn't that the bike was unsecured. It was that free, employer-provided storage doesn't meet Bikmo's policy definition of a qualifying storage facility. A paid or subscription-based facility would have been treated differently. This distinction isn't highlighted at point of sale and isn't something most people would think to check. I escalated to the Financial Ombudsman Service. The initial assessment supported my complaint. On appeal, it was overturned — the final ruling sided with Bikmo on the basis that the policy wording had been applied correctly. Final payout: £0. A goodwill gesture was offered by the Bikmo CEO following escalation, but it didn't resolve the situation. The customer service throughout was professional and responses were timely. This isn't a complaint about how I was treated. It's a warning about a specific gap in the policy that could catch other cyclists out. If you store your bike at your workplace in employer-provided storage, ask Bikmo directly whether your arrangement qualifies — and get the answer in writing before you rely on the policy.
