Disappointing and Expensive Cancellation...

1
Disappointing and Expensive Cancellation Experience After changing my car, I asked Churchill for a quote for my new vehicle. Their price was around £37 per month more expensive than the policy I eventually took out elsewhere, so naturally I chose another insurer. Unfortunately, cancelling my existing Churchill policy has left me with an even worse impression. It took far too long to actually get through to someone. You’re first pushed through an automated chatbot, answering numerous questions, and then when you finally reach an adviser, you seem to have to go through much of the same information again. Then came the real surprise – a £55 cancellation fee. I appreciate that cancellation fees may be stated in the policy documents, but £55 simply to cancel a car insurance policy seems excessive. When I questioned what this fee was actually for, I was told it covers costs including postal fees and updating details on databases such as the DVLA and Motor Insurance Database. The reference to “postal fees” genuinely made me laugh – as far as I’m aware, my communications and documents have all been handled electronically by email. I struggle to understand how this helps justify a £55 charge. I accept that insurers have administrative costs, but £55 still feels completely disproportionate for ending a policy, particularly when I’m leaving because Churchill couldn't offer a remotely competitive price for my new car. An uncompetitive quote, a frustrating chatbot/customer-service process and an excessive cancellation fee have completely changed my opinion of Churchill. I certainly won't be using Churchill again. My advice to anyone considering them would be to shop around and, importantly, check their cancellation charges before taking out a policy. Reviewed on: 8th September 2026
