BEWARE - vet prescribed medicine costs not covered

I was covered by perfect pet insurance for my dog who died after a short illness. I was astonished when i submitted my claim for vet care and medicines and the majority of the latter cost was declined. The insurer insisted that the maximum they would pay out was double the price that the drugs were available at online (although the terms and conditions say double the wholesale price which i still believe should be interpreted as the industry wholesale price). Vets charge much more for drugs than an online pharmacy so in practice this meant I was left hundreds of pounds out of pocket. I would strongly advise anyone searching for a new pet insurer to look elsewhere if you want the security of knowing your vet bills will be covered. This is not the industry standard and adds significantly to the stress during a period when you need support. Reviewed on: 12th October 2026
