Sharp selling practice

We had an existing mortgage with Barclays and wanted to borrow some more money against the house for building works (but not immediately when we remortgaged). Following much discussion they recommended we take out the extra as an additional mortgage. What they didn't reveal was there was no way to incorporate the two mortgages into one product without paying the hefty early termination fees (£1500 on each).
