Laid Up Insurance Problem

I bought "laid up insurance" as I had temporarily lost my licence due to a sight defect. I had no idea how long I would be suspended for. The insurance was rather expensive but I had to have it. I asked whether I could transfer the insurance to a normal comprehensive policy once my licence was reinstated. I was told that yes no problem - any balance left could be set against the new policy. I now have my licence back and contacted AF to set up a new policy. They quoted me a ridiculous amount of around £1000 which took into account my 9+ years of NCB. I had already researched the market and could get a comprehensive policy for around £215! I then asked for the policy to be cancelled and requested a refund for the unexpired portion of the premium paid. I was saddened to learn that "this was not possible" for laid up insurance and that they were very sorry that I had apparently been misinformed. I would definitely NOT recommend this company.
