I joined First Direct when they were ahead of everyone else. Then they just became another bank. Starling brought something new, simple and a service ahead of everone else - fee free atm withdrawals abroad with mastercard exchange rates, simple yet secure app access with an interface modelled on what modern banking customers actually want, and instant transaction notifications.
