Difficulty linking building society account.

My primary account is with a small local building society. As it’s a building society, their automated payments transaction through the building society’s BANK ACCOUNT. So the payment isn’t direct from my account. I had this issue linking an account. It took weeks to get to the bottom of the cause and I felt that could have been on a crib sheet?
