Unexpectedly I needed my cataracts done having had an inspection done at Spec Savers. He wrote a letter for me to forward to Aviva Health telling them the exact situation and saying that I needed them done urgently. NHS would take 4 months for an initial inspection then 6 months before the op. As my sight was deteriorating rapidly I decided to use my Aviva Health insurance. I had to wait ages for the phone to be answered every time I rang, and right from the beginning Aviva tried to make out that I knew I was suffering from cataract problems when I joined them the previous December. I wasn’t given the slightest idea of this situation (no letter was given to me or mention of this until the final appointment.) Week after week went by and the surgeon was booked to do the op. privately in July - both within two weeks of each other. Finally, after endless phone calls which caused me considerable stress - I am 77 years of age - Aviva said they weren’t going to pay! As the op. was due by the time Aviva told me this, I was more or less forced to go ahead and finished up paying almost £10,000 for the surgery. I am happy to report that it was successful but absolutely no thanks to Aviva! Reviewed on: 25th October 2026
