PayPal Credit: An Absolute Shambles

1
I genuinely cannot believe how utterly incompetent PayPal Credit is. For a company that's been around for most of my life, you'd think they'd have managed to drag their systems into the 21st century by now. Apparently not. Let's start with the **Current Account Switch Service (CASS)**. I switched bank accounts, and every single one of my 20-odd other Direct Debits transferred across without a problem. Every company managed it. Except, of course, PayPal Credit. Because their outdated systems apparently can't cope with CASS, my Direct Debit failed, and I was rewarded with a late payment fee for the privilege. Brilliant. Even better, their own customer service acknowledged that their system was outdated and wasn't capable of handling the switch properly. Yet somehow, that's the customer's problem to deal with and pay for. Then there's their **ridiculous Direct Debit system**. You arrange for a payment to be taken on a particular date, yet it can take days for the money to actually leave your bank account. What's the point of setting a payment date if the system can't reliably operate around it? And don't even get me started on their so-called customer service. Trying to speak to someone who actually understands your problem is an absolute nightmare. Instead, you're passed around by useless chatbots that haven't got the faintest idea what you're talking about. It's genuinely infuriating. But the icing on the cake came after the Direct Debit issue. **PayPal Credit then lumped all my purchases together, resulting in me losing my promotional payment deals.** So not only was I charged a late payment fee because their system couldn't handle a standard bank switch, I also lost the promotional arrangements I'd originally taken out. To put this into perspective, **I haven't missed a payment on any of my financial accounts for approximately 15 years.** Fifteen years of maintaining an excellent payment record, only for PayPal Credit's incompetence to potentially leave a mark on my credit file. Thanks very much for that. The whole experience became so frustrating that I eventually decided I'd had enough. I took out a personal bank loan specifically to clear my PayPal Credit balance so I could close the account and never have to deal with them again. Imagine a financial service being so dreadful that taking out a separate loan feels like the better option. **PayPal, you've been around for decades. There is absolutely no excuse for systems this outdated, customer service this poor, or customers being financially penalised for your own shortcomings.** After years of managing my finances responsibly, this has been without question one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a financial company. **My advice? Avoid PayPal Credit like the plague.** An absolute shower of shites. Never again. Reviewed on: 31st October 2026
