Review of the StepChange, Debt advice:

A life saving service!

I started to get support from Step Change in November 2019. At that point I was in a real mess financially. I was in a constant cycle of making minimum payments on credit cards, paying more than I could afford on loan payments and living month to month, worrying that I wouldn’t have enough money to pay my bills and put food on the table for my family. The advisors at Step Change are incredibly supportive, very knowledgeable and patient. The advisors reassured me that support was available and things might not be as bad as I had been imagining, my worse fear was losing the house I have worked so hard for. After a few weeks of sorting out creditors, filling in a few forms and making a couple of phone calls I was moved onto a Debt Management Plan (DMP). This means that I now make one monthly affordable payment to Step Change and they distribute the money to my creditors. They also communicate my financial situation to my creditors and have managed to freeze the interest on my credit cards, so the money I pay will now come off my bill, instead of just paying interest. I was in over £40,000 of debt but I now feel optimistic for the future and I hope to be debt free in 5 years.
