Changed my thoughts from suicidal to feeling of relief

4
My brother and I were abducted by a cartel in Mexico in 2019. They separated us and told of you want to see eachother again you need to pay. They took my bank and credit cards from me. Fearing for our lives I reluctantly agreed, to pay. They had a hand-held card machine, and under duress I entered my pin numbers. They emptied my bank account and maxed out my credit cards. I was left with a debt of £43,000. They then reunited us they told us they would know if we went to the police, (often the local police are in the pockets of the cartels). They then let us go. My biggest regret is that I did not report the crime to the local, as I tried to report the crime to the UK police. Only to be told they couldn't investigate as the crime was committed in another country. My Dr assessed me with PTSD and due to suicidal thoughts I was sent see some specialists. During this time I tried my bank and credit card companies for help. None offered any help and by this time I was paying nearly £600pcm in interest alone. I needed help. I was so thankful when I found StepChange on the internet. I filled in some forms then later an advisor phoned me to discuss possible options. They suggested a debt merchant plan which I agreed with. I make my payments to StepChange and they split it amongst my creditors. I'm left with just £410 pcm to live on and this is difficult, but do least I no longer have to pay interest on the debt. I am an issue to finish clearing the debt in 10 years time. I am very happy with StepChange. Disappointed though with my creditors in not being charitable. Reviewed on: 22nd July 2021
