I couldn't do it without them!

In my mid-twenties, I thought I was invincible so took out credit here, there and everywhere as I had a good job and could afford the repayments. Unfortunately, I then took my 22 mth old son and his dad on our first family holiday. Whilst there, I contracted a neurological virus and, within a week of returning home, I was critically ill in hospital with less than 5% chance of survival. Even then, I was expected to be paralysed from the neck down and reliant on breathing apparatus. My partner walked out on us leaving our son with my mum and we'd also planned a house move for the month after. 6 and a half months of hospitalisation in an acute neuro ward later, I came home a single parent to a child I barely remembered existed in a house I'd never lived in. I couldn't work and could barely function. Between me and my mum, we worked out that I owed more than I had coming in especially with the interest and penalty charges. PayPlan were AMAZING! They helped me to work out a budget and agreed pro rata payments with my creditors. I'm now 38 and have paid off approximately £11,500. All my creditors were REALLY supportive and agreed to freeze the interest and penalty charges so all that money has come off my actual debt amount. I have just under £1,000 left to pay off which my mum has agreed to help me with as I've never shied away from my responsibility to my creditors and have used the time to learn effective budgeting. I've never once missed a payment to my DMP or any other bills and have not had the stress of creditors and debt collectors harassing me for their money back. When I phoned my case officer for a settlement figure, she was SO supportive and said how proud she was of me. It made me proud of myself too! The settlement team have just taken over my case and I feel like the end is in sight and I honestly can't wait for the day when I can say I'm debt free. I cannot recommend PayPlan enough and truly hope they win this award because they truly deserve it. Reviewed on: 18th August 2021
