Debanking by Monzo ruined my credit

Monzo notified me that my account was being closed, and they couldn’t tell me why. I was being “debanked”. Nigel Farage got a lot of press coverage when this happened to him. I appealed to them for consideration, but was told the decision was final and they wouldn’t tell me why. They even suggested they were legally unable to tell me why. While this was true if I was actually committing financial crime, the fact that they reviewed and overturned the decision means that was incorrect. Unfortunately when they reviewed the decision they failed to communicate that to me. I then went through with changing banks, which was incredibly disruptive. It also meant the automatic payment of my Monzo loan was disrupted, leading to me falling into arrears while I dealt with their customer service and the ombudsman. I was eventually awarded £500 compensation. They’ve now dicked me about some more, so I might go back to the ombudsman. Take this as a warning - don’t trust your entire financial life to a faceless institution where you can never truly engage with someone. Reviewed on: 22nd January 2026
