Sorry for another long post but I wanted to share this as, for me, it simply felt ‘wrong’…. With such rapid deterioration in Breeze’s health and her looking so miserable, we really didn’t want her to struggle for even one day more than she needed to and so we tried to find a vet to come out to us on same day - this is not easy with so many practices currently being short of veterinary staff. From early morning we made phone calls to our vets, other local vets plus end-of-life companies such as 'Cloud 9' and 'Vets 2 Your Pets' - everybody we spoke to were super understanding, caring and tried their best to help us. By 3pm we still had not been able to find available vet(s) to come out to us at home and were resigning ourselves to having to take her into our veterinary practice or wait for them to come out the following morning. I tried one more search online and came across: ‘Vets Home Visit‘ advertised as a mobile vet - ‘Gheorghe (George) Stan’ in Brackley referred to as ‘Dr George’. Now I don’t know why but my phone call to them just set alarm bells ringing… I didn’t hear/understand what the lady answered the phone with, but it did not sound like a professional veterinary company and I had to ask if I had phoned the correct number; it took no time at all after asking for our postcode to tell me that ‘Dr George’ was available to come out to us; she asked me whether it was for a cat or dog and what breed but did not ask age, weight, why or any other questions others I had rang had asked; (now at this point I was an exhausted, emotional wreck, so I carried on with the call)… when she then said the cost will be £900 which includes our current offer for a free paw print of your pet” I was somewhat taken aback and interrupted the call to tell Tim (who, feeling emotionally exhausted himself, just shrugged and said “well if that’s what it costs to get someone out as an emergency, then that’s what it costs”). But then when resuming the phone call, she said “I will need you to text me the details we have discussed and I shall then call you back for payment over the phone to confirm the appointment” - even with my brain feeling fried, alarm bells in my head were now far too loud and I simply thanked her but then did not send a text and when I told Tim the last part of the conversation he also though this sounded very suspect. Now I haven’t seen anything reported to suggest this is a scam company but I have read about scams in America praying on people in an emotional state arranging euthanasia for their beloved pet, taking money in advance then leaving pet owners to deal with no vet actually going out to them, so for me I just didn’t feel comfortable with the way the call was handled. Thankfully, a veterinary practice local to us phoned soon after to say that they could come out and FYI they just needed an email address to send an invoice to after the event (which is the way it has always been the past with other practices) and, when we asked the cost (to include individual cremation and scatter tube) we were told £300 - that’s a 1/3of the cost wanted by ‘Vets Home Visit Ltd’ who also questionably trade as ‘Euthanasia For Pets Ltd’. I may well be just being over sensitive but I feel we were close to being scammed or at very least close to paying well over the top. Reviewed on: 28th July 2023
