Appalling insurance

My partner has been taken ill and as a result we have just had to cancel our holiday as she is not well enough to fly. I rang holidaysafe and they said that because my partner was ill, we were no longer covered by our insurance. They actually offered me a refund on my insurance; they obviously just didn't want to pay out on our holiday cancellation. They are by far THE WORST insurance company I have ever come across.
