Review of the Chase Bank, Current account:

Surprisingly great for a large bank

Maybe it's because Chase IT systems in the UK are newly built from scratch (no legacy software limitations) that everything is fast and has plenty of features that old dinosaur banks typically don't, such as showing exact time of each transaction, rather than just a date, showing card payment instantly (rather than hidden pending payments), showing upcoming payments in advance, etc. I was shocked when the app displayed a logo of a small grocery chain in Slovakia (only operating locally in the east of the country) when I paid there with my Chase card. No other UK bank would have that in their database. Opening my account was easy, just like with other modern fintechs. I applied after midnight and my ID was verified and account set up within 10 minutes. Banks like HSBC or Coop can't imagine something like that even in their wildest dreams. The only shortcoming is that Chase still doesn't offer an overdraft, which makes me less comfortable in setting up my direct debits on the account (I need to know that my DD will be taken even if there's no money in the account, to avoid missed payment and ruining my credit history). Another thing, you can have up to 10 current accounts with Chase, however, only 1 debit card for all of them... That's a major drawback because you can't have different cards for different purposes, you need to constantly think about which account is currently tied to the card and you need to manually switch it in the app if you want card payment to go out from another account. That's where I see a room for improvement. Reviewed on: 12th April 2024
