Visibility is the key. Having all your money allocated after a payday means that the decision making of "can I" / "can't I" afford this goes away. Being able to reset the application and try different budgeting categories, more / less granular, was valuable to find the right scope of budgeting for our family.

I use the main PC YNAB software and have now finally got my finances under control and know where my money disappears to! It's helping (over time) to clear my credit card balances and to also set aside money for defined items (like annual insurance and car maintenance items etc). Easy to use, and powerful too (I'm learning how to do new things with it all the time!}.
