Don't give them your biometric data, breach of trust.

The online application process has software problems, which in my case somehow resulted in a ridiculous security requirement of asking for my biometric data, totally unacceptable to require my ID complete with my photograph, total overreach. Reviewed on: 28th April 2026
Reply from Hanley Economic Building Society Thank you for your feedback and we’re sorry for the frustration caused. We do not collect or store biometric data. As part of our security checks, some customers may be asked to provide a photograph holding their ID to help verify identity and reduce the need for original documents. This is optional, and alternative methods are available for anyone who prefers not to use this approach. We continue to review our systems to ensure they remain secure and customer focused. BEWARE you will be charged to access your own money!

I wanted to close my account because I needed the money. I was told there would be a charge to transfer my money by bank transfer or no charge if I received a check (Smart money not so smart as it won't accept U.K. spelling!!.). They only send checks second class post which means it took 10 days from the date the check was issued until it cleared into my bank account. That's £53 in lost interest on my money .... a nice little earner for the Hanley! Reviewed on: 16th April 2026
Reply from Hanley Economic Building Society Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear about the frustration you experienced when closing your account. When an account is closed, we offer a choice of payment methods. A bank transfer carries a fee, which is explained at the time, while a cheque is provided free of charge. Cheques are issued and sent by second class post, and the time taken to clear then depends on the receiving bank. Any loss of interest during this period is not retained by the Society, and there is no intention to disadvantage customers. We aim to be clear and transparent about the options available and will continue to review our processes based on feedback. Response date: 29th April 2026

Provides a face to face service given by very helpful friendly staff. As my account is one that is very very slow to react to the transactions usually taking 45 minutes they are fully aware that for me to stand that length of time is very trying so they ensure I have a seat. From a customers point the upgraded(?) system is a retrograde step.Hanley Economic. Reviewed on: 31st March 2026
