A Harsh Lesson in Discrimination Against Caregivers and disabilities. I am writing this review with deep disappointment and absolute frustration after my recent experience with Nationwide Building Society. Initially, I was thrilled to receive a mortgage offer, allowing us to proceed with plans to relocate closer to family and provide much-needed support for my partner following her stroke. However, our excitement turned to disbelief when the offer was abruptly withdrawn. The reason? Nationwide refused to acknowledge the validity of my career break, a time dedicated to caring for my partner during her rehabilitation. During this period, we solely relied on our own savings and investments to support ourselves, never seeking any government assistance. Despite my strong financial history, significant assets, and a promising new career as a CEO in the veterinary industry, they penalized me for prioritizing my family's well-being. This experience exposed a disturbing truth: Nationwide, and perhaps the broader financial industry, lacks empathy and understanding towards caregivers. Their rigid policies and reliance on traditional employment history create a system that indirectly discriminates against individuals who have made sacrifices for their loved ones. It's a harsh reminder that even major institutions like Nationwide fail to recognize the realities of life and the diverse paths individuals take. Their actions send a clear message: if you choose to care for a family member who suffers sudden life changing illness, your financial future may be jeopardized.
