A lender who isn't ageist towards a 74 year old!

5
How comforting to know there is a lender, the Newbury BS, that isn't ageist, like Barclays. Everything was handled speedily and very efficiently by Sezanne and her team. I would recommend the Newbury BS to anyone. We were with Barclays for many, many years and during that time never missed a payment or took a payment holiday. We reduced our mortgage, it's term ended in July 2024, from £523,000 to £141,000 and our house is valued by the Newbury BS at £950,000 but still Barclays wouldn't let us pass their affordability and offer us a mortgage. My wife and I have pensions plus a business and rental property, our credit record is in the top 10%. We just want to live 5 more years in our beautiful family home in the country, where our two boys grew up and our grandchildren visit and love the animals, the space, peace and quiet etc. In 5 years I will be nearly 80 years old and my wife 71. We have lived here for 37 years and have many friends in the village. In 5 years we will naturally want to down size, so where is the risk? Barclays also sent a threatening letter stating they could force sell our home and present us with all legal bills, if we don't pay off the outstanding £141,000 very soon. They are charging us interest at their SVR of 8.5%! They say they will lend up to 80 years of age. Our experience has proved Barclays state a non ageist age limit but make sure very, very few applicants pass their affordability, thus in our view, being ageist in reality. Barclays state that as they are a responsible lender, they won't lend to us, what a cheek, meaning that anyone that does lend to us, is an irresponsible lender! The Newbury BS, after checking our affordability, have provided us with a mortgage that includes a 14 year term and a 5 year fixed interest rate. From today, I can work at regaining my health, which has taken a big hit, brought about by Barclays. Reviewed on: 17th October 2024
