Review of the Mettle, Business Banking:

Terrible from the start, and it continued...

1
Terrible from the start. Promised a 2-3 day onboarding but no... it took about 8 days, which felt like they could have been more open and upfront from the start. This felt very misleading as I needed the account to make a specific payment in 3-4 days time, and I could have applied to another brand (wish I had cancelled my application but they kept promising it would be soon). The app is not very intuitive and all the label text for the main nav overlapped making them difficult to read, which is a very basic usability issue to get right. The FreeAgent offer then seemed to end after 3 months, whereas I thought it was free for the first year, so there seemed to be some differences there, (I don't often misinterpret information, so I felt quite mislead) and so I felt a bit like it was not what I signed up to as Free Agent was the main reason I signed up with Mettle. Customer support were always pleasant, but then often had to go off and find answers and come back later, which didn't give you much confidence. Transferring in money was easy. But getting cash out was difficult, the card didn't work in all machines meaning chasing around. Then the most bizarre of all - they don't accept cheques to pay in! I'm not sure how they can say they're a business bank if they CAN'T ACCEPT CHEQUES - and have no arrangement with NatWest to get cheques paid in at the counter there either (yes I chased around again after a corporate paid me via a cheque). I couldn't (and still can't) believe that a business account doesn't accept cheques. So bizarre, and not at all useful as a business account. Mettle strikes me as a high street bank trying to do trendy app banking and getting it completely wrong. Why on earth they chose to do it with SME business accounts - like we haven't got enough going on without banking that's not fit for purpose. Signing up elsewhere. Reviewed on: 22nd April 2025
