Getting my life back...

5
I came to stepchange feeling very much like I was drowning. I didn't have a good relationship with my money and had managed to get myself very much in deep debt. It took a lot of time to work up the courage to realise I had a problem I couldn't get out of alone, and finally reach out for help. Stepchange have provided me with a priceless service. I told them how much I owed and who to. No judgement at all as I cried down the phone. They asked for my incomings and outgoings; taking into account even the smallest details, like how much I needed for clothing and food as well as regular bills like gas and electricity. I can access these details online at any time and change them. If my gas bill goes up, they can change how much I pay off per month, based on what I can comfortably afford. It's not easy, but with Stepchange, I'm learning to manage my money better and paying off my debt at the same time. Sure, I can't afford a holiday, but it's worth it to know that it's going to be okay in a few years. I can see my progress and how much I still owe vs how much I've paid off. They tell you when your debt will be paid off in full. This can change with alterations to bills, but it makes it so easy to understand where my money is going. For the first 6 months, you can also apply for "breathing space". This means that the people you owe money to can't phone you every day to badger you about due payments. I still get the odd letter through the door, but it's not as scary anymore, because I know Stepchange has it all handled. I'm so grateful for them. I feel like I'm working my way towards getting my life back. Reviewed on: 23rd May 2025
