Step Change - deeply impressive saviours.

Due to a prolonged absence from work due to a health condition (over a year) my wife and I found ourselves going from reasonably comfortable to borrowing on credit cards to pay the mortgage and stay afloat. After borrowing from Peter to pay Paul for a while our situation was becoming desperate - our minimum repayments were spiralling way above our ability to pay them. We seemed to be staring into the jaws of total oblivion and were completely stressed and overwhelmed. A friend recommended Step Change and from the moment we called them they calmed our fears, took the pressure off completely and renegotiated suitable repayments with our creditors and negotiated zero interest rates on our cards and loans so we could begin to rebuild our lives. Both my wife and I cannot recommend Step Change enough - their service is life changing, their advisors are incredibly calm and helpful and they are just brilliant!! I think my wife and I felt ashamed at our plight, but Step Change never judged us, they deal with everybody from all walks of life and income groups because as in our case it's not just those on lower incomes who get into debt as we proved!! We had good incomes but when we lost the biggest of those we were sinking fast. Two years down the line we're steadily repaying our debts and trying to get back on our feet and none of that would have been possible if it wasn't for Step Change. I only wish Barclays had been similarly helpful with our mortgage arrears - they have been a total nightmare over some quite modest arrears actually!!! Shame Step Change only deal with unsecured debt... Reviewed on: 23rd May 2025
