Having planned our future my wife fell ill with leukaemia and was diagnosed terminal they finished her at work after 12 months illness so we used our credit cards with zero interest rate on a temp basis as she was entitled to lifetime disability allowence so we had planned to pay the cards off . The then conservative govmt under Cameron moved the goalposts and despite her having a successful bone marrow transplant they removed her lifetime allowance even though she was left with damaged lungs etc and told by the hospital not to work. Also the full amount of my pension fund was due to be made drawdown accessible as it is for anyone these days but the government did a u turn without consultation and my fund is still in an annuity and not accessible due to our ages. This completely threw our finances into chaos and left us with credit card debts and rising interest rates. This is when my wife started looking for help and found Stepchange. It changed course back from stress and worry as we had no spare money at all and struggling to pay the cards as well as mortgage etc I felt embarrassed as we had worked hard since 16 years old and always paid cards HP etc back never owing anything. We both had good well paid secure jobs and then life happens thankfully my wife was one of the only survivors at the time of this terrible illness and the added pressure of finances made life stressed and hard. It also hurts and is offensive to be called the baby boomers of the 70s as we didn’t spend on takeaways coffees phones holidays abroad etc etc and put all our money into our home. On top to be treated disgustingly and our pensions discriminated due to our age is scandalous and has never been reverted to be accessible as pensions are today. Stepchange and the NHS have been and still are our lifeline not the government. They are both wonderful helpful caring and we can’t thank them enough. I would wholeheartedly advise going to them for advice as they can and do save lives in different ways. Reviewed on: 8th May 2026
