Triodos & other banks not democratising secure banking

Triodos is ethically the best bank around, and that is the reason I have an account with them. However... they have a reliance on phone apps to provide "secure" banking. Crusially they are not alone in this as all banks are heading in this dark direction. Phone apps create a barrier to internet access and specifically put control in the hands of two North American gate-keeping Tech Giants: Apple & Google. Democratising secure banking access by using web-standards approach should be compulsory for all banks. There are better solutions than phone apps for securing bank accounts - MFA provides that level of security or the recent push for passcodes. MFAs can be a physical [USB] key, a phone app, a web site. Crucially these solutions can even be built by individuals, or companies, meaning the balance of power is technically [though still not typically] in the hands of the many rather than the few. Triodos limit what you can do via their website if you don't use the app for authentication and have to fall back to using username/password. A sensible security precaution. But this is their choice to not implement security standards beyond a phone app and therefore end up limiting their customers access. Reviewed on: 20th March 2026
