I would definitely recommend StepChange.

The advisors were very helpful and understanding of my situation, and talked me through every step from start to finish. The application process was pretty simple, much easier and more painless than I had been expecting and I had an offer in a matter of a couple of weeks. If I need to make tweaks to my budget I can do so easily, and I am able to make extra payments as and when I can. Getting a DMP will affect your credit rating for about 6 years and potentially your ability to get credit in the future, but it beats insolvency and bankruptcy. The only real drawback I have found is that they aim to get back to you within a week when you reach out by email, but you can find phone numbers instead if it's urgent. If you're having issues with debt, I would definitely recommend StepChange. I just wish I'd done it sooner. Reviewed on: 6th May 2026
