Theft of money from my account

I made a small online purchase (a lottery ticket) from a company that once it had my card details went on taking money every week from my account, eventually making me overdrawn and bouncing my direct debits. HSBC were not obliged to refund the money, I think because I had wittingly parted with my card details; but then neither were they obliged to waive £80.00 in overdraft charges, which to my surprise they did.
