I found an offer of free £5 credit to sign up online. I needed some kind of credit card/emergency reserve so it seemed like a good idea. I am so glad I did sign up for it. Nowhere has refused it and the website is easy to navigate. Topping up is quick and easy too. I could do it via pay point (although that would incur a fee) but it's free to do online. There's no minimum or maximum amount per month and no fees. and I've never had to query my account. I can only spend what I have; I can't overdraw (which is good). I even get cashback at some of my favourite stores, including M&S. I've had this card for nearly a year now and I use it far more than I expected to; it feels like a trusted friend Reviewed on: 7th February 2016

Not often do you visit your local branch and leave with a glowing feeling; feeling connecting to the community. Halifax surprised me. In the run up to Christmas they had a luxury hamper on display, selling raffle tickets for £1 to raise money for special equipment for a local authority school looking after very vulnerable children. There was no pressure to buy but I was warmly assisted when I asked, the adviser explaining what the aim of the raffle was. I was told there was a smaller hamper to win too, although that wasn't on display. The initiative left me feeling as though there was hope for us all in this society yet/that it wasn't all cold heartless money. Well done Halifax! Reviewed on: 25th January 2015
