Responsible debt advice

Stepchange have been very helpful in assisting us with a responsible repayment plan. Another debt advice company advised me to withdraw all available credit on our credit cards, keep the money and then enter into an IVA. We already had significant debt and this would have increased the debt. As we have a mortgage we would have been expected to try and re-mortgage after 5 years for the whole of the debt (including the additional cash withdrawals and probably their fees too). They were confident we would not be approved for a re-mortgage and that the debt would be written off after a further year. However, for us it felt unethical and a big gamble. Stepchange were professional from the outset and soon had us a repayment plan approved that worked for us and the creditors. Reviewed on: 5th August 2021
