The Cost of Cancer

5
I have always recommended Petplan's Covered For Life to friends when they've asked about insurance. As the owner of five dogs we have had more than our fair share of problems these last 8 years and Petplan have been with us every step of the way. In 2012 one of my dogs went missing...Petplan covered the cost of his advertising campaign, helped with reward money and, in the end, paid out for 'loss' by theft or straying. Sadly he never came home, but Petplan supported us from beginning to end. In 2013 another of my dogs started having seizures, and, after lengthy and costly testing was found to have Idiopathic Epilepsy. Because he is on a Covered for Life policy, Petplan pay for his seizure controlling medications and 6-monthly blood tests. This year (2017), not one, but three of my dogs have been diagnosed and treated for cancer. The first was my epileptic boy, who had a mast cell tumour removed from his head and further surgery to remove clear margins. Again Petplan worked with my vet directly to pay off the costs. The other two both have Subcutaneous Hemangiosarcomas, sadly incurable...both are currently undergoing chemotherapy after surgery and diagnostics to look for spread. Both are with Petplan who are paying not only for their surgery but also for their chemotherapy, although one of the boys has gone over his yearly cap for fees (£4000) and the other will be close to his limit by the end. Although the chemotherapy won't cure them, it will give them a longer and hopefully better quality of life. Without Petplan I would have had to seriously consider the financial implications of putting my dogs through this life-lengthening treatment. I would have had to consider the heartbreaking alternative of not allowing them to have treatment simply because of the costs involved. Because I have Petplan, I didn't need to make that choice. I would never recommend any other insurance company for animals as Petplan have always given us the best service, working with my vets and never taking overly long to pay a claim or contact us if there was a problem. It's not the cheapest, but for me, it's definitely the best. Reviewed on: 19th August 2017
