Stepchange has given me control and and helped me learn budgeting tools along the way

I found Stepchange in 2018. Following a mental health crisis, and subsequent job loss my finances were spiralling out of control and I didn’t know which way to turn. Every time the phone rang or a letter came though the door I felt sick with worry dreading what was coming next. An ex-colleague found me in floods of tears and recommended Stepchange. I was terrified making the first call but need not have worried, I was greeted with a calm, friendly, reassuring voice and given advice on immediate remedial steps to take. The excellent support continued from there, within just a few weeks my DMP was set up and my creditors stopped chasing me for payments - the relief I felt was unexplainable, I could finally breathe and stop the constant worrying about money. As time went on and I felt stronger I was able to challenge payday loan companies for unaffordable lending. Some small wins allowed those debts to be cleared quicker. I started with over £14k in debt and a monthly payment of £88, in time I secured employment and I have been able to regularly review my budget and increase my payment to remain affordable. I now have approx 2.5k left to pay back and a debt free date of March-23 firmly in sight. Without the help and support from Stepchange this would not have been possible. I am so grateful and this is why I am putting them forward for my vote. Reviewed on: 28th July 2022
