When I first heard about Stepchange things were a bit bleak, we had debt that we couldn’t cope with. Then my husband had two mini strokes, I was getting desperate with stress and worry. From the first phone call Stepchange reassured me that they could help. It just took a couple of calls to give them all the information they needed to help us. The horrid phone calls and letters stopped! We worked through a realistic budget, (Stepchange don’t want you to starve). Creditors accepted that we were working with Stepchange and agreed the monthly amounts offered. We are so relieved that our situation is under control. Keeping to a monthly budget is quite a fun challenge, we have saved hundreds using local marketplace sites. The thrill of tracking down what we need, especially if it has been pre-loved, and a fraction of buying new is like finding treasure. All the while our debts are shrinking with a couple gone altogether now. So if you are in a state about debt please get in touch with Stepchange, they are friendly and reassuring, not at all judgmental. You need to work with them, they are not clairvoyant. I felt I was loosing my grip on our finances after suffering four major setbacks in a row. Panic doesn’t go far enough to explain how I felt. Then I talked to Stepchange and everything changed, they helped with friendly, non judgemental, advice and support. Suddenly we were in calmer waters, the “switching off” of the constant creditor phone calls and letters gave me time to workout a sensible budget with Stepchange and to feel I was taking back control. I dread to think what would have happened if we hadn’t found Stepchange, I couldn’t have managed without them. I urge anyone who feels their finances are getting out of control to contact Stepchange, it could be the best thing you do this year. To Stepchange… a very sincere thank for all that you do. You are not alone.

Being in debt is a very lonely place, the world seems inhospitable and the future bleak. The best thing I ever did was to contact Stepchange. They understood how I was feeling and guided me through taking control with facts and kindness without being judgemental. Stepchange helped me structure my finances so that I now feel confident running my budget and communicating with creditors. They helped me lift the biggest burden ever off my shoulders.
