A realistic approach to insurance risk.

5
From my experience.Caravan insurers in general are happy to collect the annual premiums to insure your vehicle but are reluctant to settle any claims you may have. Four years ago I had to make two claims in quick succession one which caused damage by me having to avoid a car that lost control on a corner, while the second was due to damage caused by a severe hailstone storm. At that point I had had no claims for more than 20 years and had been with the insurer for many years. At renewal the exiting insurer refused to renew my policy due to the fact that I had had two claims within five years. As a result I tried all other insurers and they refused to offer me a quote as a result of my recent claims record. Fortunately the caravan club insurers had a more realistic approach and given my long term claim record offered.to cover me at a realistic price. As a result I am still with the Caravan Club Insurance and will continue to use them until I stop caravanning which will probably be in the next 3/4 years due.to.our age. Reviewed on: 9th July 2025

Insurers take away the umbrella when it rains

I have owned touring caravans since 1973, ie 51 years. Until 2020 I had only made two claims, one in the mid 80's and the other in 1993. In 2020 I was travelling on a country road when a car came round a corner on the wrong side of the road forcing me to mount the grass verge. This resulted in me experiencing a snake which resulted in damage to the front and rear panels. A claim was lodged with my insurer and approved. However before the repair was undertaken, a horrendous hail storm did further extensive damage to the roof of the van. After much discussion re the cost of repair the insurer agreed to write the van off. As this meant that two claims had been submitted within a period of 3 years I experienced great difficulty in obtaining insurance for my replacement van as most companies were not prepared to quote due to my claims record. . Fortunately the Caravan Club were prepared to offer me insurance and I have remained with them ever since. Reviewed on: 7th September 2024

A balanced approach to Caravan Insurance.

2 years ago I had the misfortune to make a claim on my Insurance. As my c-van was 7 years old the assessor's immediate diagnosis of the damage neant that it would be a write off. This assessment was immediately reversed when he learned that the policy was underwritten on a new for old basis, and requested a quote for repair. Two weeks later a horrendous hail storm caused substantial damage to the roof and a subsequent claim was submitted. Again write off was the first response until "new for old was brought to their attention" and repair was again proposed. After much negotiation repairs were considered the wrong approach and a write of settlement on a new for old basis was agreed. I received the cash settlement and then choose a new caravan. The purchase was easy, however obtaining an insurance quote was much much more difficult. Why - I had made 2 claims in 3/5years. Despite having had caravan insurance since 1973, with only 2 claims in this period, the last being in 1992 I was astounded to learn that the majority of companies/brokers would not quote as there terms were such that my claim record over the last 3/5 years did not meet there criteria. Fortunately the caravan club underwriters have a more flexible approach and I was provided with a realistic quote which clearly took account of my previous claim record over the last 30 years. As a responsible and experienced caravanner I use the various security devises now available and this results in me obtaining various discounts and the resulting premium is more than reasonable. Accordingly I would recommend the CC''s policy to all members, and suggest that before taking out a policy they ask potential insurers what their renewal policy is if they have to make a claim as my experience was an eye opener. PS I wish that travel insurance was as competitive for over 80's Reviewed on: 25th July 2023
