Chasing Away The Debt Monster

Following my partner being struck down by a serious illness, from which she is still recovering, we ended up on State benefits and were no longer able to service our credit card debts. We struggled on for a year but, because of the compound interest applied to the debts, we were eventually in the position where the banks took more than half our monthly income and we were in a really bad financial position. That is when we approached SteChange. They helped us to set a realistic pay-back target (very modest) and dealt with all the admin. on our behalf. We are still some way from being clear of debt but the frightening interest charges have ceased, we have enough to pay for rent, food and utiltiies. Most importanly of all - they have removed the fear in which we were living. We can now see a way out. My partner's illness is still a major challenge but at least one massive weight has been lifted from us. Reviewed on: 24th May 2025

When They Come For You, StepChange Is Your Shield

My partner fell seriously ill two years ago and we fell into debt as a result. It feels very lonely when you are having to deal with the banks and you dread every letter through the letterbox. StepChange helped us to work out an affordable repayment schedule and then contacted our creditors, more or less telling them what we could safely afford to repy. The relief of knowing we are paying back on our terms and that StepChange is a buffer between us and tehm is palpable. We still get the automated letters from our bank but we simply pass them along and think no more about it. Customer Service is always sympathetic and helpful and you never get the feeling that you are being judged. Thery appreciate - and will be the first to affirm - that life can somply sometimes be rough and that their job is to help make it a little less frightening, overwhelming and difficult.
