Review of the StepChange, Debt advice:

Cannot recommend StepChange enough!

I was managing quite well until the pandemic and lockdown hit. Then suddenly we were locked down and could not earn the same money, but the bills kept coming and we relied heavily on credit to get us through it. After that, it was tough to mange but we were just about coping- until all of the interest rates, mortgages and utility bills shot through the roof; then it became very difficult, and i was paying everything but relying on credit again to get to next payday, it was a viscious circle. Breaking point came when i was in severe pain with a broken tooth, but couldnt afford to see a dentist despite working full time in a management position - I knew something had to change. I contacted StepChange for advice, and by the end of that week I'd filled in a budget sheet and they'd confirmed that a Debt Management Plan was a good solution for me, and that I'd be paying half of what just the minimum payments were at the time. This was put in place before I'd got into any arrears with my creditors, and they've managed the whole thing for me, it's been a real weight off! I have spoken to a few creditors since, and they really respect when you have a plan with StepChange, and are very accomodating. It's not an ideal situation to be in, but it definitely takes the pressure and worry off, and allows you to sleep at night while also paying off everything owed, which was really important to me. Id certainly recommend anyone struggling to speak with StepChange for advice, they can really help! Reviewed on: 1st May 2024
