More people are choosing to cycle, whether it’s to avoid traffic, get more exercise or to just enjoy nature. Just like any other form of transport, it’s important to insure your bike. Here’s what you need to know to make sure you’re covered if something unexpected happens.
Do I need cycle insurance?
Unlike car and van insurance, it’s not a legal requirement to have cycle insurance to ride your bike in the UK.
But your bicycle is subject to many of the same risks as a motor vehicle would be so taking out insurance is important, especially if you’re a regular bike rider or have a high value bike.
Is my bike covered by my home insurance?
Many people think they’re covered for bike theft under their home insurance but this may not automatically be the case.
Most policies will cover your bike for theft from your property but won’t necessarily protect it when you're out and about. You could buy out-of-home protection as an add on but you’ll need to make sure any excess and additional cost is worth it, compared to the cost of replacing or repairing your bike.
If you need to make a claim because your bike has been stolen and you claim under your house insurance, you’re likely to see premiums increase as a result. This is why some people prefer to have a separate bike policy.

What's covered by cycle insurance?
Like most types of insurance, you can select basic or comprehensive cycle insurance cover. Check the policies you’re considering for restrictions including whether their new for old policy applies to bikes of any age.
Not all policies cover quick release components such as seat posts and wheels and some may also specify that your bike wheels as well as your frame are always locked. It’s also common to be asked to meet a minimum level of security for storage.
Standard insurance generally covers theft and damage when your bike is stationary as well as damage due to an accident while out on the road (usually when you're with your bike). You can also get policies that cover custom bikes, clothing and equipment including detachable accessories.
You can also get cover for roadside assistance and the cost of missed race fees or training if you or your bike is out of action. Personal accident insurance will cover you if you're seriously injured while out on your bike. You can also include public liability in the event you cause an accident.
Will my bike insurance cover me abroad?
If you want to take your bike on a family holiday or a training tour, check whether your bike insurance covers you overseas.
Many policies will cover you in Europe, including for theft while in transit with your airline, rail or coach provider. It won’t necessarily offer worldwide protection.
Your bike insurance policy will specify how many days of cover outside of the UK you’re entitled to. Many policies limit travel to 90 days per year, so if you’re planning a longer trip you may need to take out specialist cover.
Which cycle insurance is best?
If you’re looking for the best bike insurance, it’s important to consider every aspect of the cover, not just the price. This is why, when you’re researching cycle insurance providers, you should read customer reviews.
Our Smart Money People community have shared the bike insurers they love and who they think you should avoid in their reviews.
If you've had an experience with a cycle insurer that you think other people should know about, you can also leave your own review to help others with their research.
