I opened my first account about 10 years ago, the advisor gave me the talk about their 'advance account' and that this is the account for me (I started with saying all I need is a debit card and internet banking), nontheless I was given the advance account, because this is the only one that 'suits my needs', as this was my first ever account I didn't know anything about bank accounts, after about a year or two of me paying a monthly fee for the account with 'benefits' that I wasn't even using, I realized that non of my friends are charged for having a bank account, so I went into the branch and told them I don't want to pay for this, I had to tell the advisor several times as he continued to repeat the stuff about the amazing 'benefits' the account comes with, eventually the account was changed to a free account. I never even thought about this until last year, when I read up on packaged account misselling. I raised this with HSBC, they sent me an extremely detailed form to fill in and send back, which I did. A couple of weeks later I received a completely generic letter with points, non of which were relevant to my case, and statements like 'all of our advisors follow our process to the letter', suggesting that they never mis-sold a packaged account in the history of the company, all this in a tone suggesting I'm a liar and instead of raising this complaint I should have played with the toaster in the bathtub.

I was stunned, I did not expect this kind of treatment from the bank I have been with for over a decade, so the next day I opened a savings account at my other bank and moved all of my money out of HSBC.

Don't get me wrong they are an ok bank, the service is adequate, but if you have a problem, you are on your own, they don't care about you, they don't even want to hear about it.

Nice and Simple

Basic bank account is good and online banking is simple and easy to use. No fee for account, no interest...I have no experience of overdraft so no idea about this side of the account. Lots of branches with, in my experience, helpful staff and plenty...

Wife
And
I through out our
Lives, marriage Childrens
Bond and later other savings accounts, the Bank has helped us all the time with help and advice sometimes even impattial advice which has surprised me on more than one occasion. I am ver Gratefull to the Bank for all the help given to me and my family throughout our lives both whilst working for a company and when going self employed then had advice which was exceptional so I will be eternally gratefull for the help I had at that stage of my life but theyo have helped us through out our lives so I will stay with them through retirement as well and I would never think of changing as they have and still are being good towards me.
Business accounts and with savings we have had help and good advice all through out lives and they even contact me when I make a paymentre they are concerned about so I am very Grateful towards them and will never change Bank as its the Only Bank for Me. Philip John

worst customer experience trying to open a bank account. I have crossed international borders with my temporary passport without any problems but HSBC for some reason won't accept it?! all government institutions, including the British government, have accepted my passport since it is a valid, government issued passport so HSBC had no valid reason deny me a bank account. When asked what the issue is, their employee said: the tenure of your passport. However, they accept non-temporary passports that expire at the same time as my temporary passport so that obviously doesn't constitute a valid reason.

Plus, after completing one of their online applications for a bank account, I waited for 3 weeks for a phone call to arrange a meeting but that never happened. then, i had to call myself and start completing the form via phone, AGAIN! so why do they even have the option of online applications if you never attend to your customers anyways?!

Conclusion: horribly bureaucratic without any solid reasoning behind it.

I found it simple to set up this account via the online banking service of my existing current account with HSBC, and I can access it on the same screen to move money with ease and check the current balance. The interest rate is poor, but I trust the bank and in the current financial climate, I found few places offering better rates.

HSBCs investment platform is very basic, limited functionality and portfolio view options, although it is easy to use. Also, they do not charge holding fees like other providers such as HL, although they do charge a quarterly admin fee. Also, the lack of a mobile app to manage investment seems a bit behind the times, pretty disappointing considering the size and scale of HSBCs operation.
