Very good student overdraft support.

Very good student overdraft support. After leaving university I had several difficulties with leaving my overdraft, especially due to low income and high living costs; but HSBC was there to support me and enabled me to get back up on my feet with no interest on a high overdraft. I’m thankful for this support as now I am back in a stable position! Reviewed on: 13th June 2025

Best Card for Students

This is the best Student Card to have. It has the best incentives compared to other banks. Also the mobile app is very easy to use and it gives you a breakdown of how much you have and how much has been spent. This is very useful to visualise the monthly spendings as it can help with budgeting. I would recommended all students to get this card. Reviewed on: 1st June 2023

Alright for students but not amazing

Had some issues with the app's responsiveness, and payments getting rejected even with an arranged overdraft which is odd. The student credit card is nice though it's difficult to stay under 50% of the credit limit, which they don't raise. Had difficulty getting my overdraft limit on the student account raised, even though they claim you can get up to 3000 quid in your 3rd year. It's not my favourite but it does a decent job. It was very easy to apply to and also has great benefits when opening an account. The mobile banking app is also very good as it sends notifications whenever someone sends you money or when you spend which some apps do not have. Reviewed on: 10th March 2023

Just AWFUL at absolutely everything

HSBC offer lucrative offers for students, which you will never receive, and pay for with years of the absolute worst service imaginable - which you could really do without when being a student with a million other things to worry about. I had to go into the branch multiple times because they continually failed to set up my bank account as it was ‘simply forgotten’ somewhere along the line of people involved in doing so. Once finally set up I received the wrong card twice, and when I did receive my card it did not come with a pin - so I needed another one sent. This process covered many weeks. Whenever I have a query the live chat refers me to the phone in service, which will leave you on hold for hours and rarely resolve your issue. I never received my reward (which would only partially make up for such rubbish service) and when I rung in they made some nonsense excuse about not offering that service any longer even though the time I set up the back account was well within the dates established in the ToCs. Essentially, they took too long to provide my £80 and reward, and when I finally decided to contact it was “too late”. Don’t bother with these guys. Stick to Barclays. Reviewed on: 11th April 2022

HSBC told me my student account was interest free then charged hundreds of pounds in interest

Horrific experience - I had a student account with HSBC throughout my degree which had an interest free overdraft as part of it. Once my degree finished, I called them to ask when the interest free overdraft would end and they said they'd give me a year post-grad to work my way out of overdraft. A couple of weeks after that phone call, they started charging me interest and as I was living abroad and not using my account much I didn't notice. They took hundreds of pounds in interest and when I discovered this and complained they gave me 20 pounds as compensation for the wrong information given to me but never gave me back the interest I'd had to pay. I'm now in debt because of this. Don't bank with them. They just want your money and don't care for customer service at all. Reviewed on: 5th November 2020

Other student bank accounts offer better freebies!

No good incentives to open your student bank account here. Only incremental increase in overdraft that you have to keep applying for. Banking with them is easy though, and I've had no problems. Reviewed on: 27th April 2020
