Unreliable overdraft.

The 0% overdraft is very good, however I have called customer service numerous times as applying for the arranged overdraft is impossible! When opening the account in branch it was the initial £1000 In year 1, £2000 in year 2 & £3000 in year three @ 0%... Read more

The 0% overdraft is very good, however I have called customer service numerous times as applying for the arranged overdraft is impossible! When opening the account in branch it was the initial £1000 In year 1, £2000 in year 2 & £3000 in year three @ 0% that made me choose HSBC. After applying through the app & being declined & being on hold to customer service for an hour, (for how many times I’ve lost count) was told they cannot tell me why I have been declined & I should check my credit score (which is perfect) would not recommend HSBC if you plan to be financially dependant on your student account.

HSBC told me my student account was interest free then charged hundreds of pounds in interest

Horrific experience - I had a student account with HSBC throughout my degree which had an interest free overdraft as part of it. Once my degree finished, I called them to ask when the interest free overdraft would end and they said they'd give me a year post-grad to work my way out of overdraft. A couple of weeks after that phone call, they started charging me interest and as I was living abroad and not using my account much I didn't notice. They took hundreds of pounds in interest and when I discovered this and complained they gave me 20 pounds as compensation for the wrong information given to me but never gave me back the interest I'd had to pay. I'm now in debt because of this. Don't bank with them. They just want your money and don't care for customer service at all.

Other student bank accounts offer better freebies!

No good incentives to open your student bank account here. Only incremental increase in overdraft that you have to keep applying for. Banking with them is easy though, and I've had no problems.

Rubbish

Absolutely rubbish. The online banking app won’t let me log in until they post me another validation code to my home address which by that time I will be away at university. They also haven’t sent me a PIN meaning I’m going to uni with no pin and no way to check my expenses or balance. I called and they said they could do nothing

Good overdraft, poor customer service

They gave me a significant overdraft, but were very poor at communicating any changes to my account. Additionally, I couldn’t contact an agent easily to discuss problems.

Poor communication, slow to deal with but reasonably reliable

Poor communication, slow to deal with but they don't make too many mistakes. Mobile banking is poor, but is getting better slowly.

When I was a student in University I was able to apply to get a student account which allowed me to have an £1000 interest-free overdraft. This was very helpful as I was able to dip in and out of my overdraft for things like extra food, cheeky booze, partying and nights out, and trips back and forth home. I wouldn't have been able to do that otherwise, so thank you HSBC for allowing me to do that!

Could give or take HSBC

Sometimes I find the staff helpful, other times procedures seem complex I.e insisting on an appointment to change personal details

Good overdraft service

Online banking can be fiddly and the app is not compatible with my phone so can't use that, otherwise good fraud prevention service and overdraft amount for students

Fantastic deals

The student account is easy to set up and provides fantastic deals with interest and postgrad overdraft benefits. The additional bonus of being able to get a student credit card to start building a credit score is also very useful.
