HSBC UK:inaccessible and non inclusive banking

1
Thanks to smartmoneypeople email prompt to write a review about a financial product.i have chosen to write about my permanent long term HSBC UK bank account and customer experience. My wife and I are extremely disappointed being a long term customer for two decades with this bank. In the last 20 years , there are very less improvements made by HSBC UK bank account, especially around the user interface of the banking app, customer experience when applying for products like a credit card or opening a child’s account for them to learn to save and know about banking. As I am also a customer with other banks long term, I can see how the other banks have moved forward and made significant efforts in changing their app’s user interface and introduced more accessible and digital measures like easy banking using secure open banking links, improved transparency when applying for credit cards and child accounts giving customers full control of all their financial products held with the bank. However, HSBC UK is still stuck in the 70’s era when I have to fill in needless account numbers, sort codes for every money transfer or via a physical standing order and traditional external direct debits .i am a disabled person as well and when i applied for my child’s bank account after being impressed with their bank interest rates, all we had access to was one letter that was sent out and the old style deposit and withdrawal slips sent via post. It is now like a ghost account. As I have disabilities, I have no means of physically able to take my child to a branch to teach her how to bank in this digital era. This is really absurd and when I even raised this issue that we cannot even digitally access this account as a reasonable adjustment for families and for a child having disabled parents and the response I received was quite disheartening tbh as the person said that we will be sent a statement in the post regarding this account in that case. I do not see the logic in this . I have applied for similar products with habc uk’s competitor high street banks and we have full digital access to this account. I also had a very negative experience when I applied for a credit card despite meeting all the eligibility criteria and then being asked to call customer support only to be informed someone from the credit card team would get back to me which they never did . I finally gave up as I once again got a credit card in a flash with a decent credit limit from one of their competitor banks and have full digital access to manage this account. You might be wondering why I haven’t left this bank… the only reason my wife and I haven’t left this bank is because of the age of holding the account for a long period working in our favour . The only thing HSBC UK is doing well is making their systems secure .. so while they keep improving their internal systems they give back nothing to the customers or their families. No rewards like the other general banks , no digital mechanisms, no accessibility and no support. Oh and yes I’ve used their global banking features to send money abroad and while it is ok despite a slight VISA markup rate reduction portrayed as free transfers , it does the basic job to get the money transferred within 3 days. I have also now stopped using that feature because I find competitor e-money platforms transferring money within split seconds for a transparent small fee with no markup rate reduction which offers a much more intuitive experience than the 3 days tradotional markup rate reduced international transfers by HSBC uk bank.. my wife and I are seriously planning to move out everyday banking and income to other banks offering more accessible and inclusive banking while keeping a small ongoing subscription or direct debit on the HSBC uk bank just for the sake of keeping it open due to credit history positive impacts from the long term age of the account Reviewed on: 16th June 2026

The best banking app!

There is so much I can say about HSBC, but what I appreciate most about them is how they care. Anytime, I reach out to their customer service team, whether virtually or in person, I am always met with the most gracious, kind, knowledgable and patient individuals, that always solve whatever issue and answer whatever question I have! I love using the app for how user friendly it is, how straightforward and simple the design is! Reviewed on: 11th June 2026

Disgusting customer service

I have been a customer of HSBC and my account has been under review since the 18th of April with absolutely no access to my own funds. No explanation, no timeline, no communication. During this time I have visited my local branch 6 times, called repeatedly, and contacted HSBC via live chat on multiple occasions — all while on probation at work, putting my job at risk every time I have had to step away to chase this up. On one of my branch visits I was spoken to rudely by staff and I have this recorded. I have raised a formal complaint, referred my case to the Financial Ombudsman Service, and contacted my local MP — and still nothing has been resolved. Today on live chat I was told by one agent that they could send a request to the review team to temporarily release my funds. Minutes later a different agent told me they could not help — and instead referred me to a food bank. I have thousands of pounds sitting in my own HSBC account and I was pointed towards the Trussell Trust. This is one of the most insulting and disgraceful things I have ever experienced from a bank. HSBC has failed me at every single level — branch, telephone, and chat. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing and real customers are suffering as a result. I would urge anyone considering HSBC to think very carefully. When you need them most they will leave you with nothing and refer you to a food bank. Reviewed on: 6th May 2026
