Fraudulent transactions on my account

Recently a Chinese national used my PayPal+ details to stay in a London hotel and spend money in Marks & Spencer’s, food outlets etc. The fraudulent activity took place when I was working in Rawtenstall, Lancashire, which I can prove. I do not understand how they were able to do this and it was only through my own efforts and the hotel’s help confirming the passport details of the thief, that PayPal refunded the hotel payment. They have refused to reimburse the other fraudulent purchases even though I could not have been in London. The fact that my identity was so easily stolen and PayPal’s shameful response has caused me a lot of distress and I have advised family and friends not to use PayPal. Reviewed on: 7th July 2026
