Like other reviewers here I also had a horrific experience trying to open a WebSave ISA with West Brom. The rate was good, the experience was the worst banking related experience I've ever had. The complaints person blamed the bank that the money was coming from and took no responsibility for the failings, lack of action, lack of follow up, mistakes, lack of response or lack of practivity - they sent forms by snailmail which got lost in the post, they emailed evenutally when I contacted the other bank and got the details, as WB were not willing initially to contact the other bank, they forgot to send forms and basically did a horrible job that only completed because I was in touch with them and other bank on an almost daily basis, racking up 4+ hours of phone calls, losing >£500 in lost interest (they claim that's ok as they give themselves 30 days to do what others take 24 hours to complete). I got a call today from a very condescending Complaints manager offering an insulting and offensive settlement, which has only encouraged me to go to the Ombudsman and to warn as many potential customers off ever using West Brom. That said, the team answering the phones were all lovely, were very embarrassed and seem to be let down by a system and backoffice team that don't deliver and put them in a very awkward position. I recently opened a monthly saver account at Oswestry branch. The service was unbelieveably good; reminded me of the service we used to get in... I was recently looking for a new mortgage and approached three or four financial institutions - including the one I had my existing mortgage with. The West Brom product was not the cheapest on the market (although it was reasonably competitive). However, while larger institutions chose to hide behind COVID and applied turnaround times of their own convenience, rather than that of the customer, West Brom were a pleasure to deal with. The application process was efficient. Everything was explained in detail but in a common sense manner which meant there was no hard-sell on associated products when it was apparent I had the necessary protections elsewhere. Their mortgage advisor (Sam) called when he said he would, sent documentation when he said he would and, on one occasion, actually went into the office especially on a Saturday morning so that he could complete the necessary detail prior to his holiday. When he was out on holiday, I was given a stand-in contact (James) who was equally responsive. The entire experience restored my faith in customer service. West Brom were excellent in every way. Because of closing a standard book account and a isa a had withcthw West Brom when I was naive and a lot younger head office wrote stating that due to the recent activity on my account they were closing my account, which was quite strange to see in writing as since opening the account on Wednesday I had been waiting for the book to arrive at home in order to make monthly deposits into the account. Which wasn’t the reason the West Brom were closing the account. Rather then see if circumstances had changed and wait to see if I meant to build what money I needed for my own place the West Brom decided to close my account that I opened on Wednesday due to the naivety of my youth as the reason to close the account which was verified verbally by a member of staff on Saturday as well as today. Overall, I would not recommend The West Brom, mainly because they offer poor mortgage percentage deals, no online accounts and their customer service team is hard to get hold of. They make you pay for their legal fees (£1140.00) who ask for TONNES of ridiculous and unnecessary searches resulting in even more fees and an increase in my own solicitor fees because of the extra work. One of the searches is usually used for properties worth over 1 million but they wanted it for a 100k house!!! Their legal team are appalling at communicating and causing unnecessary delays with a simple no chain purchase. I intend on buying 3 or 4 more properties this year and will not be using West Brom purely because of this. Read more Read less
