Although best known as a mobile phone provider, in 2015 O2 launched Drive, a car insurance service aimed at younger drivers.

O2 Drive is split into two products: Box on Board and the O2 Drive app.

O2 Drive box on board is a black box insurance product designed to help inexperienced drivers improve their driving and lower their insurance premiums. Black box technology - also known as "telematics" - sends data about your driving to your insurer, which means they can offer you lower insurance premiums if you prove yourself a safe driver.

The app also lets you manage your insurance from your phone. It shows you how safely you've been driving - a "driver score" - and presents a list of perks that you're entitled to.

These perks are a key part of the O2 Drive offering. They include discounts and offers from major retailers. Many of these perks are separate to those offered to mobile customers through O2 Priority, so you don't have to be an O2 mobile customer to benefit.

O2 Drive came up as a reasonable car insurance comparison quote, and I picked them because of the 5-star Defaqto score. Little did I know that the Defaqto score is just for the options offered , NOT the quality or review score. O2 Drive is a new service set up by mobile company O2, on the cheap, to cash in on the lucrative car insurance market. So while the advertising seems good, after being with them for a year, I am utterly shocked at how poor the service was, and how downright unhelpful and arrogant the majority of online staff were, when you do actually need their help. For instance, I finally has a minor accident after 7 years no-claims, but when I reported it, I found I had accidentally mistyped a letter in my registration number, but the documents I had sent over actually had the correct details. When I had to lodge a claim, O2 Drive gleefully told me that they wouldn't accept it because I had made an error, and it wasn't their responsibility to check my other documents even if they had been requested, so rejected it. They told me I would have to contact their underwriter Ageas myself. Ageas were sympathetic at first, but then later came back and told me that O2 Drive had totally bluntly refused to accept my claim, so I had to pay for the massive insurance repairs to both cars myself. When I tried talking to O2 Drive again, the handler actually laughed and made fun of me, telling me I "should be grateful the police didn't come and arrest me for driving without insurance" after mistyping my number-plate. Giving the correct details in the rest of the documents doesn't count. I wasn't happy at the vervice, and did complain, but then O2 Drive just dismissed it.
O2 Drive never bothered contacting me ever again, and I renewed car insurance with another company, then found O2 Drive had the nerve to automatically RENEW my car insurance with them without even telling me, and without my permission.
A totally incompetent, "just 9-5", bunch of minimal-wage staff, who have no idea of customer service, and just don't care.
Please avoid until they actually introduce even a little customer care.

I have just finished a year with 02 drive, which has been mediocre really. Though I wish I had read reviews beforehand.
Pros:
- black box is not overly harsh on time of day driving (after 11)
- great discounts and o2 benefits
- was the cheapest alternative

Cons:
- customer service is shocking the less contact with them the better. Not that they correspond with you much anyway. They take about 10 minutes to put you through to someone when you call up (all of which is charged). I was working the day they planned to fit my black box so had to pay a fee to change the date
- breaking and acceleration scores are horrid, one bad drive takes about 10 good ones to get the score back out of red. Clearly they don’t want you to use your brake whatsoever as I’ve had a score of under 50 since I started. It’s ridiculous.
- Haven’t contacted me about any renewal offers etc as my insurance runs out next week but luckily ive found another company for half the price, with no black box so good riddance. Stick to selling mobiles and leave the car insurance to the professionals

After purchasing car insurance from O2 Drive, all seemed fine,...until I missed 1 payment. I paid the £20 fine and resumed payments as normal, that is , until I changed my payment date. They took 2 payments from my account in one month and refused to refund me my money. They admitted they were at fault but still no refund. Bank wouldn't refund it as O2 Drive set it as a card payment instead of a DD. Absolutely furious that they left my account balance at £22 and knowingly advised me of incorrect information. Once my policy is done, I most certainly will not be returning and will warn anyone and everyone to avoid them as much as possible. The low Car insurance quotes are just a ruse to lure you in and take advantage.

I went with O2 drive for my first years insurance as they offered me the best deal. 10 months on I’ve had nothing but problems. I have a black box, whenever checking my score my awareness and acceleration are well below 50/100 when my speed and time of driving are 98/100, I happened to meet a girl who lives around 120 miles from me, who was insured by the same people and she had the exact same issue! I have since changed my car and have got a new box for the car, and the exact same thing happens (so can’t have been a fault with the box). I wished I read the customer review before purchase. I was hit by a new driver and after taking the details and forwarding me to Enterprise, I soon realised that they are not trying to resolve my claim. After many phone calls to them without a reasonable answer I finally lost my temper. A few days later I relieved a email saying that I need to contact their underwriter (The co-op) and take my claim up with them. In the end I gave up and paid for the repairs myself. I am finding a better company as soon as my contract ends even if it costs more. ABSOLUTELY RUBBISH COMPANY. Cheap and trashy.

Apparently we forgot to mention we had contacted Northumbria water about a damaged tyre from a pothole!
I would not recommend them at all, poor service.

In over 20 years of driving, this has been my worst experience with an insurance firm. O2 Drive is provided by a company called BISL; they took a seond payment from my credit card without permission (nearly doubling the premium), were unwilling/unable to check the CUE database once information had been updated, rebuffed several attempts at providing information they requested, and have wasted hours and hours of my life. Their customer support team are locally based, accessible and friendly, and are helpful within the rules and procedures available. However, were it not for their escalation team (CW, thank you), I would currently be taking legal action. The company is broken - internal departments don't work together and I found myself fobbed off and frustrated.
Never, never, never again.

Honestly cannot tell you how much they have run me up the walls and had me back and forth.

O2 car insurance is the worst thing I ever took out - I wish I paid the extra for it. The customer service is absolute dog sh*t and they dont listen, just transfer you from pillar to post. I had to make a claim with them due to hailstorm damage and due to the amount of numbers on their website, turns out I never even reported it to them - apparently my underwriter?! Even though I took the number off the O2 car insurance claims website.

They then cancelled on me for getting black flags because I was driving 41/42 in a 40!!! Then once they cancelled on me, I had to pay out!! I then got a letter about 3 weeks later stating how I must pay 411 and that I owe them this. I have been back and forth on the phone with them about this and they are just getting stupid, they keep transferring me off to the wrong people. JUST LET ME PAY THIS AND GET OUT OF THIS AWFUL COMPANY. DO NOT EVER USE THIS. THEY ARE THE WORST. I WISH I READ THE REVIEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very poor service when I needed to change my car: gave me a quote for the new one that was nearly double the cheapest alternative, and 40% more than o2 themselves quoted via an insurance comparison site. The rep was completely uninterested and there was no sense they were interested in keeping me as a customer. I chose to pay the cancellation fee on my policy and go elsewhere, and still saved a lot of money! Not a great attitude towards their customers - thank God I didn't have to make a claim; I shudder to think what they would have been like to deal with.

Pity there's no option to give no stars.My daughters partner took out insurance with O2. He's been stopped twice for not having insurance, apparently not on the database. First time he contacted them about it they made some ridiculous excuse about a delay putting it on ( over 2 months) but they assured him it would be done. Lo and behold he got pulled by the police again a month or so later for no insurance. So he got onto them again and they came back with the explanation that there was a problem with the underwriters. They then said it would cost him an extra £1200 to sort out, go figure. End result insurance cancelled and taken out with a proper insurer
