No refund after cancelling

Paid this company my whole 12 months insurance upfront. Cancelled because I sold the car 5 months later. Apparently no refund due at all, the only thing I got was a letter in the post with a statement that says Syntax Error!!! You cannot speak with anyone about this so I have just wrote it off.
