Policy in practice is great toolkit, easy to use for both the advisor and the participant. it is very accurate and informative, the scenarios are particularly useful as you can show the ppt their potential earnings based on 16, 24, 30, 27 hours of work etc which allows them to make an informed choice around work and what is best for them. the budeting tool is also great. we also embed the toolkit into our website which works very well and allows us to support more people taht wouldnt usually access the service so quickly. Finally, a calculator that actually makes sense!

’ve just started using the Policy in Practice benefits calculator and it is honestly so much easier to use than others I’ve tried. The best part is that you don't have to spend ages working out your local authority’s council tax rates—the system just handles all that for you, which is a massive relief. I also really appreciated the student income section; it’s usually a nightmare to figure out how that affects everything, but this tool made it straightforward. It’s not just a benefits checker, either. Having the income maximisation combined with a budgeting tool in one place is really helpful. It gives you a proper look at your actual bank balance, not just a list of numbers. If you’re looking for something that’s easy to navigate and actually gives you the full picture, I can’t recommend this one enough. Reviewed on: 21st April 2026

Welfare Benefits Advice made simple

I use the calculator on a daily basis in my role as a welfare benefit advisor for a housing association. We have regular meetings with the team to discuss potential changes and fixes and the policy in practice team of developers are always very accommodating in implementing changes wherever possible.
