Setting up my savings account in 2023 was a nightmare. The administration of HEBS was clearly way overstretched and the service was terrible - I lost the interest over a long period because they insisted on a cheque so that meant the funds needing to be transferred were sitting around in a current account. Now, some two years later, I wanted to close the account, they had not informed me that they had changed their rules and so yet again there were days' worth of delay before they would transfer my funds back to me, and then, hey! they charged £25.00 to do that. No, I hadn't requested any CHAPS payment, absolutely not, nor at any point had I been forewarned that this amount would be deducted for a transfer. But also appallingly, at no point over the whole long period I have held this account did this building society ever inform me either by email or letter of changes to the interest rate. This is of course a statutory requirement on all banks and building society, but no, this never happened. The response from HEBS to that point is - 'We sent emails but you didn't receive them'. Well, how does that happen when my email address has always been the same? You can tell that from my point of view, the building society is a shambles, a total administrative shambles and in good faith, their administrative practice needs serious investigation. It is totally inappropriate and unacceptable to carry on like this. Read more Read less

I scoured the market for an equity release product that suited my needs for over a year and eventually found the Hanley. They recognise that people may use savings to fund their living expenses instead of drawing income - and are therefore willing to look at assets (e.g. pension funds) when reviewing affordability. The advisor on my case, Jane Longmore, was absolutely fantastic - friendly, helpful and efficient. She supervised and guided throughout the whole process until a successful conclusion.
