so there's a penny ready for a rainy day

Brilliant for being able to set aside a small, but regular savings amount to 'forget' about until a rainy day - and see how it builds over a few years. Not talking a large amount, but by regularly saving say £20 each month, gets you into a habit of saving, is small enough that doesn't impact on your other daily outgoings, yet becomes a nice little contingency to be able to use in emergency or to build upon and increase when able, so a decent deposit for a long term goal in a few years time, or a little treat!
