On our way to Spain via Ireland, we broke down as we...

On our way to Spain via Ireland, we broke down as we were about to board the ferry at Cairnryan. We waited 11 hours for recovery of our motorhome but we were left at the ferry port because the recovery driver couldn't take us with him. No contact from the RAC and I was not able to get through to them. Abandoned 200 miles from home on a wet, cold and dark evening with all of our possessions in our motorhome, we found the nearest hotel, 23 miles away. The next day we discovered that our vehicle would not be unloaded at the repairers until late afternoon, another 120 miles from where we were. Only then could we get access to our belongings. Eventually, the next day, I got through to the RAC who arranged for me to pick up a hire car from several miles away. We drove to the repairers and collected what we could from the motorhome and drove another 70 miles home, arriving there exhausted, 36 hours after breaking down. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of communication from the RAC, leaving a couple aged 75 and 72 on the quayside at Cairnryan ferry port to find their own way to a hotel and then a further 120 miles to reclaim their possessions, and a further 70 miles home. Although we have received an apology and an offer of £50 as a goodwill gesture, I feel that this in no way compensates for the fact that we were left for 10 hours, trying to keep warm in freezing temperatures. Then having to make our way to a hotel checking in without bags. The RAC have offered to pay for the hotel. Reviewed on: 13th December 2024

useless - paticularly for over 50 !

I tried to get a call out to home yesterday and was told to go on line to RAC using RAC.CO>UK / breakdown but email address was refused ! Tried again to day - same message . What use is this to an 80 year old woman stuck on a motor way - the main reason I get breakdown cover. Need less to say I am changing breakdown cover immediately Reviewed on: 11th August 2023

Great help to elderly couple on a Sunday

A puncture that shredded the tyre left my wife and I stranded on a B road in Shropshire. We phoned Saga breakdown and though there was a lengthy wait of over two hours on a Sunday, a very helpful RAC man eventually arrived at the location and towed the car to the hotel eight miles away where we were booked in. This is our first experience of Saga breakdown and though the experience is never pleasant, it was made much more bearable by the knowledge that help was on its way. The RAC man kept me informed of his location as initially he was about 50 miles away. Reviewed on: 14th September 2022
