Student Account set up and assistance

Process to set up my student account was made easier my staff at the Burton branch. They talked me through the process, assisted in ensuring I had the correct documentations and were transparent about how the account could be used and what fees I may encounter in different circumstances. It was set up to ensure that it would automatically change into a graduate account upon the completion of the 2 year student account; once again explaining the differences between the two accounts and informing me of the change in advance of it happening. Very informative, the account is easy to navigate and suited all my needs and more with the provided overdraft options. Couldn't have asked for more support! Reviewed on: 22nd January 2026

Good Starter Student Account

This was a useful product for students with a new UK address, as most high street banks needed utility bills in account holder's name to open the account. The account was charging the user, obviously, but nothing extortionate so was manageable. Otherwise a pretty basic account that had all the baseline functionalities, such and domestic and international transfers, albeit in GBP currency only, mobile and online banking app. Reviewed on: 12th January 2026

Get the railcard and go! Whilst the railcard is a good initial incentive, Santander really isn't worth sticking around with - unless you really need the overdraft, I'd suggest grabbing the railcard and then switching to a more ethical provider / one that helps you generate interest on your current account holdings! I had a student current account and was in my overdraft as I am a student nurse and was struggling to earn money whilst doing my degree full time, I was on a 12 week placement and Santander reduced my overdraft limit from £1000 to £150 overnight with no warning Reviewed on: 14th April 2024

perfect for students

The app is laid out very neatly and it’s easy to understand. Where the documents are placed could be better organised as there’s multiple tabs to click through. As well as this, making a payment could me improved, there should be a tab along the bottom where you can click, without having to select your account (I only have one account with Santander therefore shouldn’t have to click extra buttons just to make a payment). Other than this, Santander is a good banking app and also helped through university with the provision of an interest free overdraft. Reviewed on: 21st February 2024

Attractive benefits. Disappointing branches & app.

Santander's student current account is competitive. The 4 year free Railcard and interest free overdraft starting at £1,500 makes it an attractive product for students. Santander boosts is also a nice idea, but limited in practice. However, the app is rudimentary and slow, and banking in branch can be underwhelming, due to the short opening hours and long waits for counter service, not to mention the recent branch closures Reviewed on: 8th January 2024
