Retaking control

You've come to the end of your tether, swamped by red letters and final notices. So phone StepChange - one of the best half hours of your life. They sort out what you spend on what, what you owe, what you can afford to pay back after allowances are made for the amount you need to live on. Then they sort out the repayments (through them) and companies listen to them whereas they wouldn't listen to you, because they have standing. And the best bit (apart from the relief of finally doing something positive about things) is that they're a charity and won't charge you a penny. Reviewed on: 23rd April 2017

I can’t thank StepChange enough for the support they gave me during a really difficult time financially. From the very first conversation, they were understanding, non-judgemental and genuinely helpful. They took the time to explain everything clearly, helped me understand my options, and supported me in putting a realistic plan in place to get my finances back under control. The advice was free, impartial and tailored to my situation, which made a huge difference when I was feeling overwhelmed. Step Change stepped in and helped

Step Change helped out when I felt I had nowhere else to turn. They were understanding, non judgemental and helpful. It took the weight off my shoulders when they contacted creditors, stopped letters and additional interest. Reviewed on: 27th May 2026

I was in £15k debt paying monthly minimums...

I was in £15k debt paying monthly minimums and getting nowhere. Then I found StepChange and decided to give it a go because how much worse could it get. But to my surprise signing up to StepChange and a DMP lifted an enormous weight off my shoulders (what felt like Atlas holding up the world lol) from paying nearly £700/mo to a much more affordable £250ish was such a relief, yes it’s taken longer to pay off the debt but it’s improved my mental health immensely. Saved me so much stress!

I was seriously stressed and losing sleep over my finances, aa soon as I spoke to StepChange that all changed! They arranged one manageable monthly payment which covered all of my debts, and they dealt directly with debtors on my behalf so I didn't need to worry anymore. It won't be long now until I'm completely debt free, and I can move on with my life. Absolutely brilliant service, but you have to work with them and do your part to be successful. A heavy weight lifted off my shoulders!

StepChange has been a weight lifted off my shoulders. I got myself into a bit of a mess due to mental health and life events, and felt there was no way out. I had never heard of StepChange until I came across a recommendation on Martin Lewis money expert website. Being with Stepchange has allowed me to get back ontop of my finances and pay back in more affordable amounts monthly. The staff have been very helpful and really helped me understand my options when initially deciding what would work best for situation and over time so I can rebuild my credit score. They have also explained clearly what would happen when I first signed up and made the process stress free and clear to understand and navigate. I Can't stress enough how this service has helped me and that a service like this exists.
